PCI Auto Aircon Pte Ltd operates a one-stop air-conditioning service and repair centre for buses and heavy vehicles at Sin Ming AutoCity, Singapore.

Technicians regularly carry out air-conditioning installation, servicing and maintenance work on top of buses and heavy vehicles, at approximately 4 metres above ground level. Providing effective fall protection while allowing technicians to work efficiently was therefore an important safety requirement.

Action Safety proposed an engineered overhead lifeline solution designed to provide continuous fall protection while maintaining freedom of movement within the vehicle maintenance bays.

Technicians needed a fall-protection system that would allow them to move safely along the length of buses and heavy vehicles while carrying out maintenance activities.

The solution needed to:

• Provide continuous overhead fall protection.
• Allow technicians to work with minimal restriction.
• Minimise potential fall distance.
• Avoid unnecessary obstruction within the workshop.
• Withstand regular use in an automotive maintenance environment.
• Provide suitable personal fall-protection equipment for each user.
• Support safe and efficient air-conditioning installation and servicing activities.

After evaluation of the work environment and maintenance requirements, the SecurLine® Overhead Cable Lifeline System was selected as the most suitable solution.

Four separate 10-metre stainless-steel overhead cable lifeline systems were installed above the designated vehicle maintenance bays.

By positioning the lifelines overhead, technicians can remain connected while working on top of buses and heavy vehicles without introducing unnecessary obstructions at floor level or within the vehicle-access areas.

Each lifeline system was paired with a 10-metre EXYAN® ARA stainless-steel cable self-retracting lifeline. Rope taglines allow the SRL connectors to be retrieved conveniently from ground level before use.

Technicians were also equipped with EXYAN® RIO Series full-body harnesses, completing the personal fall-arrest arrangement for the intended maintenance activities.

The overhead lifeline systems were installed by a SecurLine® authorised installer in accordance with the approved system configuration and manufacturer requirements.

The anchorage locations, cable assemblies and associated components were positioned to suit the vehicle maintenance bays and intended work activities, ensuring an effective overhead fall-protection arrangement for technicians.

The completed installation provides PCI Auto Aircon with a practical and reliable fall-protection solution for technicians working on top of buses and heavy vehicles.

The overhead configuration allows technicians to move more freely along the maintenance bays while remaining continuously connected. The use of self-retracting lifelines also helps minimise excess connecting-line length and reduce potential fall distance.

The system supports safer air-conditioning installation, repair and servicing activities while maintaining the operational efficiency required in a busy automotive workshop environment.
